Beginning with the 1990 season, The UIL introduced the two-tiered playoff system for Class 5A, resulting in two separate 5A state champions for football. Under the initial plan, the top three finishers from each 5A district advanced into the playoffs. Of these three finishers, the school with the smallest enrollment was placed in the 32-team "5A Regular School" bracket. The two largest enrolled schools were placed in the 64-team "5A Big School" bracket. In 1991, The UIL adjusted the two-tiered playoff system by sending the school with the largest enrollment (of the top three finishers from each 5A district) into a 32-team Division I bracket. The other two schools are grouped into a 64-team Division II bracket.
