This article appeared in The Odessa American on August 29, 1965 about the upcoming District 2-4A season. Even though Permian was picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the preseason district poll, the Panthers won the district title and went on to claim their first state championship, defeating San Antonio Lee, 11-6 in the 4A title game .
